Replace caustic soda with Nordkalk Milk of Lime to increase safety and cut costs

Caustic soda is widely used in different industries, such as pulp & paper, metals & mining and water treatment. The market price of caustic soda is high nowadays, so there is a need to find alternative products. Milk of lime is safer to handle than caustic soda, as it is a less hazardous substance. Milk of lime also has significant cost advantages.

Milk of lime is calcium hydroxide slurry which is available with a dry content of 15-40% depending on the customer’s needs.

Safety

Milk of lime (pH 12.45) is a safer product to use due to its lower pH level. The pH of caustic soda is higher (pH 14.0) and therefore it is more corrosive and can cause chemical burns or damage skin.

Cost savings

Nordkalk Milk of Lime is a more cost-effective solution than caustic soda. At current price levels, caustic soda costs four to five times more than milk of lime, so remarkable cost savings can be achieved with a lime-based product.

Technical performance

Nordkalk Milk of Lime has excellent dispersive properties thanks to its porosity and grain sizes. It efficiently neutralizes acidic water and controls the hardness of water. Milk of lime is less temperature sensitive than caustic soda. Caustic soda starts to solidify at +16 ºC, while milk of lime can be used in temperatures above 0 degrees. In addition, less lime is needed to produce the same results as caustic soda, depending on the application.

Milk of lime is safe, cost effective and easy to use in processes, which makes it a viable solution to replace caustic soda.
